New Confederate monument in Aiken not a protest says leader of local group

Aiken County in South Carolina is an example of something that is happening in non-487 counties. An older county in SC that still has a majority of good folks, the northern migration to the south is changing it’s culture. The liberals organize and vote, so even though the county went strongly for Trump, the city and state politics are incredibly liberal.

The group that organizes the annual Civil War re-enactment known as the Battle of Aiken has erected a Confederate monument on its land near Aiken at a time when similar memorials are generating controversy.

But the commander of the Sons of Confederate Veterans’ Brig. Gen. Barnard E. Bee Camp No. 1575, told the Aiken Standard on Tuesday that the project wasn’t a response to the recent calls by many government officials to remove Confederate-related statues, markers and other structures from public grounds.

“It’s not a reaction to the monuments being pulled down,” Francis continued. “We’ve been working toward this for years. We had no idea it would come to fruition at the time of this mess.”
